Macular Degeneration and Essential Oils Macular Degeneration is an eye disease which leads to the thinning of tissue in the eye affecting a persons central vision. The process of retinal cell destruction is partially a result of the reduction of macular pigment. This pigment is comprised of yellow antioxidants which we can receive from food and dietary supplements. 

Inflammatory levels going wild also plays a large role in macular disease. This loss of macular pigment and elevated inflammatory markers are an indicator of macular degeneration. It’s really not a matter of chronological age or genetics it’s more what we have done and are presently doing to our physiology. Try the holistic approach offered below to both prevent and assist recovery with this condition.

“The traditional thinking is that as age increases, visual sensitivity decreases.  But what we are saying is, maybe that’s not inevitable,” said D. Max Snodderly, Ph.D., head of the laboratory at The Schepens Eye Research Institute in Boston, Massachusetts, an affiliate of Harvard Medical School.

Essential Oils Cross the Blood-Brain Barrier

I coach clients daily on the importance of optimal nutrition and the use of steam extracted, therapeutic grade essential oils. As previously mentioned, dietary awareness also plays a large role in macular health. Eating foods that are high in lutein and zeaxanthin assist with healthy macular pigment formation. 
I personally have a large organic garden at my home and benefit from the nutrition provided from various fresh uncooked organic greens and vegetables.

The greens contain 15-47% lutein, but low zeaxanthin.  The orange bell peppers offer quite a bit of zeaxanthin (37%). Kiwi, spinach, zucchini, and squash also contain zeaxanthin.

Greens and other fresh vegetables offer continuous healthy genetic expression. It’s really all about daily healthy lifestyle choices. There is a lot of science proving these foods provide very powerful phytochemicals assisting cellular regeneration! Proper nutrition and the  gut-eye-brain connection truly needs to be addressed.

Diet, Meditation, Exercise Improves Quality of Life Increases Longevity And Lengthens Our Telomeres Study UCSF

A small pilot study shows for the first time that a healthy diet, exercise, stress management and social support may result in longer telomeres, the parts of chromosomes that affect aging. When the numbers of telomeres shorten, this hastens disease states. Just as shoelace tips stop fraying, telomeres keep chromosomes stable and prevent mix-ups when cells divide.

This research was published online on Sept. 16, 2013 in The Lancet Oncology.

The study was conducted by scientists at UC San Francisco and the Preventive Medicine Research Institute, a nonprofit public research institute in Sausalito, Calif. that researches the effect of  healthy dietary choices  and lifestyle practices on health and disease prevention.

“Our genes, and our telomeres, are not necessarily our fate. So often people think Oh, I have bad genes, there’s nothing I can do about it,” Ornish said. “But these findings indicate that telomeres may lengthen to the degree that people change how they live. Research indicates that longer telomeres are associated with fewer illnesses and longer life.”  said lead author Dean Ornish, MD, UCSF clinical professor of medicine, and founder and president of the Preventive Medicine Research Institute.

Macular Degneration And Essential Oils 

From my research, here are a few therapeutic grade essential oil products which assist in restoring and protecting visual balance.

  • OMEGA 3-EPA-DHA  – Critical for brain and eye health

    1 drop in palms, rub palms together and cup over OPEN eyes for 3 minutes 2-3 times daily. Then cup hands over nose, inhaling deeply 6-8 times. (anti-inflammatory, DNA protector, mood elevator) You may also put a drop of Frankincense on your finger and then lightly massage directly under the eye brow and a drop of Frankincense on the top of the cheekbone. The oil will migrate and do its job. I also place two to three drops under my tongue and hold for 2-3 minutes.

  • COPIABA – The strongest anti-inflammatory essential oil

Frankincense May Lengthen Our Telomeres Reducing Cellular Inflammation And Toxicity

Long telomeres help to keep our eyesight, brain, immune system, skin and entire body in optimal shape. Studies indicate that the chemistry associated with Frankincense affects the cell’s life span through lowering inflammation and cleaning up toxicity within the cells.

This helps to keep long telomeres at the end of our chromosomes. Long telomeres at the end of the chromosomes afford healthy DNA protection. Longer telomeres mean our cells can stay healthy and young. Cell toxicity, inflammation and stress shorten telomeres.

The use of Frankincense helps to prevent these conditions. I personally use two to three drops under my tongue in the morning and evening. Holding the drops for 2 minutes is part of my routine as Frankincense crosses the blood-brain barrier (enters the brain) and is known to repair or delete the damaged cells.

Avoid getting any oil in your eyes. The antidote if you do mistakenly get essential oil in your eye is to put a small dab 0f coconut oil or olive oil in the corner of your eye to dilute it. The sting goes away quickly. Don’t use water. The reason is that essential oils are not water soluble but will be diluted with the oil.
